Filing for Exemptions with SmartFile

Lake County's Chief County Assessment Office offers an electronic filing system for your convenience. We've put together the following instructions for you.

  1. Visit Lake County's SmartFile e-filing portal. This link will open in a new window.
  2. Create an account (or log in if you have previously created one).
  3. Click on the exemption you are applying for.
  4. Search for your property -- be sure to omit the dashes in your PIN -- then begin filing.
  5. Follow the prompts on the screen and answer the questions accordingly. Anything with a red asterisk ( * ) is a required field. Once each page is completed, click “Next.”
  6. Upload required documents (ID, trust documentation, proof of disability etc.).
  7. Submit.
